The Question:
What paperback size do you prefer?
The reason I ask is because I’m considering what dimensions my finished V.Chronicles novel should be. I’ve heard complaints about some books being too big to carry around, and some about being too small to read. So, I’m curious what you feel the perfect size for a book is:
Do you like the small easy-to-carry 5″ x 7.8″ size?
Or the easy to read 5.5″ x 8″ or bigger 6″ x 9″ sizes?

Yup. I also don;t like square books (yes, square covers) because they don’t fit your hands properly.

I really like 6″x9″ books – they’re close to the size of hardcover books, but so much less bulky. 🙂

Agreed. I don’t like bulky either. 🙂 I have shelves of 6″ x 9″ books, and I really like them.

I couldn’t decide… so I went with the middle option. *lol* I like all paperback sizes, tbh. But make sure you take the manuscript’s word count into consideration. Smaller page sizes can sometimes lead to more pages overall.

It’s good to be flexible! My shelves are stuffed with all sorts of sizes, and I like most of them. The only ones that bother me are those with words too small or cramped together to read easily.
Yes, that’s true. I’ll get into page count details once I’m further along; it’s definitely important to keep in mind, I agree.
I’m just curious what sizes other readers besides myself like. 🙂

It sort of depends on the length of the book for me, but I like thicker books to be a little bigger. If that makes sense. 6″x9″ is a good size though.

That does make sense. I was thinking an average 400-something page book, which is a bit thick. Do you like paperback or hardback more? I’m torn between the two, myself. 🙂

Tough question. I tend to like paperbacks a little more I think just because in my mind they’re easier to hold.

I prefer the middle size. I would recommend also checking what effect a larger size will have on your print cost, as that will affect your overall royalties. Good luck!

I generally go for the average paperback size. Travel ability is important to me. I agree that the trade paperback is easier to read, but they tend to get beat up more at my house and if I’m going to have a book that big I’d rather have a hardcover. Just my personal preference.

Good points you brought up about travel ability, Alina. That would be the reason I’d consider making a smaller sized paperback. Myself I prefer the middle, but I’d like to make a smaller size available too.

Depends on the print size and number of pages. I was *just* talking about how I miss mass market sized books and how everything is trade sized now.

I had in mind an 11 or 12 font size and 470 pages, which is thick. It might be difficult to read as a mass market size, but then again, I’ve read the mass market size Going Postal and had no problem with it. I agree the trend feels like it’s leaning more towards trade size. I wonder if that’s because most self-published books are trade size?

I might like to read that in a bit larger book then. I’m not sure why. But I can’t remember the last time I got a mass market size that wasn’t a children’s book.

When it comes to paperback, I don’t have a preference. My biggest thing is that I really don’t like hardcovers–too big and bulky to transport. But my bookshelf is such a mosaic of different-sized books and colours and there are some hardcovers scattered among the rest ;P

Yes, I’m thinking a paperback that’s somewhat smaller than the hardcover and easy to read would be best, so probably the middle option. Do you think the middle size would be okay for transport?

I could make do with the middle-size I think. I love things small and compact, but then it can become hefty width wise. I guess each has its pros and cons 😛
I should post a photo of my bookshelves. They’re reenacting the twister scene from Wizard of Oz at the moment…

I print in 5.25 x 8 which is comfortable to hold and read as well as easy to transport. I think your middle size option is best. 🙂

5.25 x 8, I will keep that in mind and see how my book looks in that. It does seem to be the most liked option; I know I like it so far. 🙂
