Writing In The New year

Since it’s the start of a new year, it’s time I look over my writing results for 2017. And from there, tentatively plan what it is I hope to achieve in 2018. You could call this the writer’s version of a new year resolution. 🙂

2017 Writing Stats are as follows:

  • 2nd and 3rd drafts of Strayborn complete.
  • 1 novella drafted.
  • 1 Snow White Re-telling short story entered into Rooglewood Press’s writing contest.
  • 2 short stories on the blog.
  • 12 poems on the blog.
  • 3 bonus short stories which I plan to release sometime this year.

Well, that’s not as bad as I’d thought. It doesn’t meet what I’d hoped for in last year’s writing plan, but it’s still a good amount of writing and revisions done.

There’s something about the word “plan” when it comes to writing that I don’t much like, simply because writing is a form of art and not something that can be forced. But plans can be a helpful source of motivation, and a strategy in battling against deadly procrastination, and so, I shall write up a tentative writing plan for this year.

Writing Plan for 2018

  • Polish up the final draft of Strayborn and publish it.
  • Start on the sequel to Strayborn.
  • Revise 2 novellas that have been waiting for my attention.
  • Draft up a standalone novel, based off a recent story idea that hit me (love when that happens).
  • Continue writing poems, and maybe some short stories.

There it is, the hope of what I’ll accomplish in this new year! Though I’m not making myself any promises. 🙂 We’ll see how it goes, and you can help keep me accountable along the way via your lovely comments. Reading them always gives me a much needed boost of motivation!

As for life goals outside of writing: I need to continue exercising, and finding healthier food choices that avoid soy and the many starches that plague gluten-free foods. Continue learning how to draw people (because for me they are the hardest thing to draw!). Hopefully go on a fun vacation (I wish it could be Europe or New Zealand, but that’s a bit out of reach right now, haha). Learn more about plants, so I can keep all the greenery indoors alive (my air plants keep dying on me, *sniffle*). Learn how to make cool videos for Youtube, things for readers and writers. And most of all, continue studying and memorizing the Bible.

  1. I think you had a great year writing-wise, E. Completing not one draft, but TWO, of a novel in one year is quite a feat! So do you think that you have only one more draft to go before Strayborn is done? And when do you think you’ll hear back from the short story contest?

Good luck with all of your goals for 2018, both creative and personal! 🙂

    • I guess it is, isn’t it? Though to be honest I did beat myself up about not getting three drafts done instead, haha. X)
After this draft I’m having another writer read it over one final time, and THEN I’m going to do the final final draft and be done. 🙂
It was a long wait for the short story contest. Just last week I finally heard back, and it seems my retelling was too much on the humorous side and not what they were looking for. Oh well, it was fun to try though!

Thank you, Sara! And likewise with your own 2018 goals!

  2. That look like a productive year last year! Good luck with your goals for this year. 🙂 I’m excited to see Strayborn published after your journey with it.

A small part of me is considering starting to draw again, but I’m not sure. I could always draw animals and objects far better than people as well. Hands…hands were the things that plagued me the most. :/

    • It’s strange because going through the year I felt like I was barely accomplishing anything. But looking back, it was a lot, wasn’t it?
Thank you, and good luck with your goals for this year too! I can’t wait to share Strayborn when it’s ready!

Drawing can be relaxing, especially while listening to music or simply sitting outdoors. Let me know if you share your drawings online! I’d love to see them. And yes, hands are so hard, trying to get the thumb just right and all.

      • I think that’s why it is good to look back sometimes, just to see how far we have come. 😊 And I’m looking forward to it!

I’m still thinking about it. I will let you know if I do. 😊 I used to just hide hands behind people’s backs. Or other objects in the background.🙄

  3. These are some great goals! I’m also trying to exercise more! And I’m planning to go to Canada again this year for travel. ^ ^
