Facing Your Death Star Problems #RogueOne

Movies are full of themes and lessons we can apply to every day life, and that includes Rogue One, a Star Wars story. We try and fail and try again to achieve something, just like the rebels do, and Death Stars rise up in our path that we must first learn to overcome. (below quotes are from the movie Rogue One)

“Well, you have to start somewhere.”

When there’s a goal you want to reach, you have to start somewhere to get yourself going. Otherwise it won’t have a chance of going anywhere. But maybe you feel yourself incapable, like a dreamer who dreams great things but can’t necessarily carry those things out.

“There are no Jedi here anymore. Only dreamers like this fool.”

Dreaming is where an idea begins. So without dreams, nothing can be made. It may seem foolish to others, but go ahead and be a dreamer! Afterall,

“What chance do we have? The question is ‘what choice’!”

What choice, indeed, when an idea is knocking on your head, trying to break itself free? You must respond, you must act, you must unleash the idea!

“Be careful not to choke on your aspirations.”

Don’t set your goal too lofty, though, unless you’re fully prepared for failure. With every idea, every project, comes the risk that things won’t work out as planned and could ultimately fail…

“We call it the Death Star. There is no better name… and the day is coming soon when it will be unleashed.”

Beware the Death Stars lurking over your shoulder, just waiting to ruin your hard work and make your ideas fall apart and your confidence plummet. Be mindful and follow your plan carefully, and keep checking for any faults that could be hiding within it. Sometimes no matter how careful you are, though, it may not be enough to prevent your plan’s destruction.

“We were on the verge of greatness.”

Looking back at your ruined idea, the greatness that it could have been, you will feel downcast and frustrated and a whole cluster of more emotions.

“Its power to create problems has certainly been confirmed.”

That is what Death Stars do in life: create problems. But you can learn from them, and use what you learn to prepare for the next time. Draft up a new plan for your idea, while giving special attention to fixing what made it vulnerable to attack the first time.

“It’s a chance for you to make a fresh start.”

Failing the first round doesn’t mean your idea can’t work with a bit of tweaking. Sometimes it’s failure that turns around and makes your idea stronger and better than it ever would have been otherwise!

“The strongest stars have hearts of kyber.”

Be a strong star, and persevere!

“I find that answer vague and unconvincing.”

I guess that is vague, but you get the picture.

“I’m capable of running my own diagnostics, thank you very much.”

And so you should be! But a bit of friendly advice doesn’t hurt now and then, right? Especially when you’re facing planet-destroying, dream-wrecking weapons.

“They call it the Death Star. But they have no idea… there’s a way to defeat it.”

Those Death Stars aren’t all as insurmountable and invincible as they may seem. Each one has a weakness, and you only need the location of it to win. (And a faithful robot friend to help)

“If we can make it to the ground, we’ll take the next chance. And the next. On and on until we win… or the chances are spent.”

Keep on looking for those Death Star weaknesses, and keep working on your ideas. Even if the next project fails, and the next after that, keep on trying until all chances are spent!

“Then they shut the gate, and we’re all annihilated in the cold, dark vacuum of space.”

Don’t let that happen, though. In other words, don’t wear yourself out until you become a zombie floating in space. If a project continues to fail again and again, it may be time to step back and leave it alone for a long while. You can always come back to it later, when you’re feeling refreshed.

“Doesn’t sound so bad to me.”

Exactly! Now go out there, you dreamers, and write or draw or sew or study or build or whatever it is you want to do, and face down those Death Stars along the way!
