A Barrel of Fun #WeeklySmile

When the days stay warm, and there’s no longer a threat of frost in the night, it’s time for us to get the old barrel ready! It’s become one of our yearly traditions. This old barrel was left behind by the people who had this house before us, and one day, after walking through town and seeing shops and restaurants fill large pots with flowers outside their doors, I got the idea to make our ugly barrel into a giant flower pot like theirs. And so it began. 🙂

Each year we try something new, different colors, different plants, to see what works best and will last through fall. This year we’re trying out some colorful-leafed plants mixed in with petunias, and these pink bell-shape flowers that I forget the name of.

Flower shops are fun to go through, and the one near us has a big outdoor section and a green house section. There are so many varieties and colors to look at, not to mention their decorative garden decor, I spend hours there. I like the idea of terrariums, though mine never seem to last long. But the barrel has proven to be a perfect planter. If you have an old barrel or bucket laying around with no purpose, maybe you can make it into a flower pot too. 🙂

What was your weekly smile?

  1. My mom uses a decorative whiskey barrel for flowers, too! She tips hers on its side, though, and shows the flowers “spilling out.” Pretty choices of flowers in yours, btw.

My weekly smile was playing Monopoly with my great-aunt this past weekend. My family and I visited our relatives in Maine for the holiday weekend, and that was an evening well spent. 🙂 That, and watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 again last night!

  2. Ooh flowers!! I *love* your idea! I have a few wildflowers growing out in our backyard, but they only last for a little bit before they’re gone. But for that little bit, our yard is super fragrant. ❤

  3. I love your flower pot! What a great idea for that old barrel. 🙂 It’s so pretty. Also, so excited to read your review of Captive Hope. I love hearing your thoughts and insights. Have a lovely Tuesday!
