This is part of the A-to-Z blog challenge for April. My theme is legends and legendary creatures (both real and fiction). I hope you enjoy following along!
Vampire Fish
It’s official name is Payara, but many like to refer to it as a vampire fish because of…well, I think it’s pretty obvious. 😉
(above is a photo from the TV series River Monsters)
This predatory fish is found in the Amazon Basin. You can see the two long fangs protruding from its lower jaw: These fangs can be 4-6 inches long and are kept in pockets in the skull. Payaras themselves can reach a length of 4 ft and a weight of 17.8 kg (39 lb).
Here’s a video where one man sets out to catch one of these fish (fast forward to 5:00 to see the vampire fish he finds!):
Do you like to fish?
Would you be brave enough to fish for this monster?

At first I was thinking of the piranha, since it comes from the same part of the world. But then I Googled “payara” and realized it’s a whole other fish.
Hmmm… I wonder what would happen if you put a piranha and a payara in the same pond… Or maybe I’d regret thinking that. :S

Lol, what a nightmare that is! Piranha and payara together, yes, either they’d devour each other, or they’d team up and come after us. XD

I don’t fish. And after seeing that, I’m glad. Scary fish!

Haha, my feelings exactly! The more you research fish, the more scary fish you realize exist in rivers and lakes.

Geez! Those are the biggest teeth I’ve ever seen on a fish! It’s even more vicious looking than a pike or a barracuda and that’s saying something.
