Today you will meet the stately, young adult, Gandalf-like character who is a lover of knowledge, books, and exploration: Master Nephryte!
This monthly meme, hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up & Further In, is where authors and writers answer a series of questions regarding their interesting characters. Find my other character posts here.
I know I’ve been quite mysterious about my characters and the world in V.Chronicles, but there’s a reason behind my method. 😉 I want the novel to, at least, be near publication before I spill secrets. However, a few fun BP posts is a good excuse to leak out some info beforehand, I think. ^_^
I imagine Nephryte’s facial features, ears, and eyes to be something like the image above, though the colors are different: his hair is brown, no face paint, and he is not a scary clawed person as in the image, haha (Well…maybe… 😉 ). The outfit below is something he’d wear, but in a shade of blue, and there’d be some embroidery on the shirt cuffs for a fantasy-tale feel.
So, who is Master Nephryte?
He’s the cool, young adult Master and mentor of the protagonists Cyrus and Aken at the elite D.G. League Academy. Their story takes place in my current work: V. Chronicles. Here are the entertaining questions, below, that will help us get to know him!
1. What first inspired this character? Is there a person/actor you based them off of?
Master Nephryte was actually based off of an old character I created when I was younger for an entirely different series. And that old character in turn was inspired by a very old cartoon from my childhood days, *lol*. I won’t say which one. I’ll leave that up to your imagination. 😉 But Nephryte has changed so much over the years that he no longer resembles anyone, and is truly his own independent character. 😀
2. Describe their daily routine.
Some early mornings he’ll go for a jog around the city streets. He likes to keep fit and eat healthy; a good breakfast of eggs and homemade cereal. His day job is teacher/Master at the D.G. League Academy. So he’s off being a teacher for the school’s older students from morning to afternoon. He then divides his time between being a mentor and Master of his own group of younger students the rest of the day, and grading papers (fun, fun).
3. If they joined your local high school, what clique would they fit into?
He loves books, reading, knowledge, exploring, and adventure. So the book lover or world explorer cliques would fit him.
4. Write a list of things they merely tolerate. Ex: certain people, foods, circumstances in their lives…
- The horrible mother of one of his students
- Too-greasy food
- Aken’s repeated misbehavior
- Anyone who says reading is dumb
- A fellow Master who keeps getting in his way
5. How do they react in awkward silences?
If he created the awkward silence himself, then he’ll pointedly stare at the other person until they squirm.
If someone else has caused the awkward silence, then he might attempt to smooth the situation over and restore peace.
6. Can they swim? If so, how did they learn?
Yes, though I haven’t thought about how he learned. It would be at a young age.
7. What is one major event that helped shape who they are?
*SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!*
Sorry, but you’ll have to read the books for that. It’s major.
8. What things do they value most in life?
Nephryte is rare among his people in that he cares for and loves all living things and people, no matter what race of humanoid they’re from. This is why he takes protagonist Cyrus under his wing, even though she’s half-elf and considered an enemy of his race.
9. Do they believe in giving other people second chances? Do they have any trust issues?
He himself was once given a second chance, and his whole belief system is based on second chances. So yes! This also means he’s willing to trust others. But that doesn’t mean he’ll let down his guard just because he trusts someone. He grew up during a harsh war, and knows better than to blindly trust. He’ll sleep with one eye open.
10. Your character is having a rough day…what things do they do to make them happy again? Is there anyone they talk/interact with to get in a better mood?
A fellow lady Master he grew up with is his first go-to person when he’s feeling down or stressed about something. Afterwards, he’ll go fix himself a cup of tea and settle down with a book for the evening.
He wants to avoid anger as much as possible because of something he did in his past, so he seeks out soothing, relaxing things to cool down. If that doesn’t work, he’ll work it out through exercise.
I hope you enjoyed your first introduction to Master Nephryte. If you want to learn more about him and the world of V.Chronicles that he lives in, follow this blog via the “follow” button and my author newsletter.
