The Freestyle Writing Challenge, with a LoTR Twist

Fellow writer Sara Letourneau nominated me for this freestyle writing challenge. Thank you, Sara! It’s fun and different from the usual challenges you see out there, if not a bit nerve-wrecking trying to write something decent within 5 min. hehe. 😉 I hope you enjoy my attempt below:

First, here are the rules of the Challenge:

1. Open a blank document.
2. Set a stop watch or mobile phone timer to 5 or 10 minutes.
3. Your topic is at the foot of this post. DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO SEE IT UNTIL YOU ARE READY WITH YOUR TIMER!
4. Once you start writing, do not stop until the alarm sounds!
5. Do not cheat by going back and correcting spelling and grammar using spell check. (The challenge is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible thought-flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write with correct spelling and grammar.)
6. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation or capitals.
7. At the end of your post, write down “No. of words = ____” to give an idea of how much you can write within the timeframe.
8. Copy and paste the entire passage on your blog post with a new topic for your nominees, and copy / paste these rules along with your nomination (at least 5 bloggers).

And Rawls E’s writing prompt was…

Pick any fictional world you’ve read about. Now, pretend you open a book about this world. On the last page, you find a moving / animated picture of the world – and you touch it. When your vision clears, you’ve been transported to this world. Where are you? What happens as soon as you arrive there?

On the last page of The Hobbit, I reach out and touch an image. I suddenly find myself swallowed into the book in a flash of blinding light and there…I’m in the Woodland Realm. Not only that but in Thranduil’s throne room. I sneek up the steps to his throne. None one is there or watching. A cloak, glowing purest silver lies there, and I can’t resist the urge to put it on, and twirl, making it swirl around me like a silver waterfall. The crown is also there, I done it. It’s a bit heavy though, but in a pool of reflecting water I look fabulous! Magestic and like a real Elven Prince!

Footsteps approach. Uh-oh! I better get out of here fast. I don’t think Thranduil would be happy to see me wearing his special clothing. I quick run down the steps, but forget to take off the cloak, and find myself descending a maze of steps and hallways that echo like stone as I run—trying to run quietly. I don’t know my way around this place, though. I hear voices, drawing near. I wrap the cloak around me tighter, and edge around a corner to peek out. There’s Legolas. Yikes! What’s he doing here? Oh, right. Thranduil is his dad, isn’t he. But I don’t think he’d appreciate me wearing his dad’s stuff either…

(LOL, yep. This half elf couldn’t resist a chance to visit Tolkien’s world. 😉 The typos are screaming at me, btw. It’s all I can do not to go back and fix this! As I was writing, I used the backspace button a few times, but only on the word I was still typing. I didn’t go back and fix anything. I think the backspace button is allowed for this challenge, right?)
